In all of my years of formal education (22?) there is one single hour that still stands out as my favorite. It was a 10th grade chemistry class that had nothing to do with chemistry. Mr. D was giving us a real example of how the scientific method works. The dictionary says that its a "method or procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses." He was teaching how to present and defend a viewpoint even if it were opposite of what the rest of the world viewed as ‘correct.’ He taught me that there can be two sides to anything and the to never immediately reject an opposing view. Who knows, he might be right.
His hypothetical argument was, what if, these glass sphere things that we use to illuminate your lives don't actually emit light but rather suck dark. And as ridiculous as that idea is, it was frustrating because there was not a question any of us could ask him that he could not answer with his theory. Why are they darker after it no longer works? It's been filled with dark. Why are they heavier? Because dark has mass. Why is it that when you turn it on, it appears brighter the closer you are? Because, like any vacuum, it's more difficult to pull dark from far away. The questions kept coming and he had an answer for every single one. It was really annoying. Actually, you try it. How can you disprove Mr. D's dark sucker theory.
I've got one answer, and it is the only answer. In the beginning the Earth was without form and void and darkness hovered. Then He said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. There was dark and God made light. Then from Genesis 1:31, Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. The idea that God is light begins with Creation and continues throughout the Bible. In 1 John 1 we read that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
So, here we find Job. Sick and tired of being sick and tired. An incredibly prosperous, famous, successful man who has become "one in whose face men spit." In the world that I work, that kind of stuff gets you put in the hospital. Despite all of that Job remains faithful and although his body is not what it was, the thoughts of his heart, his dreams can change his world. His God can change his world. In the face of darkness, his heart tells him that "the light is near."
My point is this: I don't really care if He emits Light or sucks dark. I'm just happy that He always does what He does.
