Matthew 17:20
"Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
Absolutely one of my favorite passages of the Bible. It empowers us. It frees us. It also shows how Spiritual Warfare is to be successfully fought. There are ways to fight and lose. This verse tells us how to fight and WIN. Ready? Let's go! First, let's go ahead and get rid of a few fundamental theological errors.
We don't need to question whether it is God's will for us to be healthy or sick. God wants you healthy. God wants you to be happy not depressed, smooth moving not in pain, loved and loving not despised and miserable, dependent on Him not drugs or alcohol. God created you healthy because He created us how He wants us.
We were built to work. In Eden we can find a great metaphor of what the human life story should be. We are created. Then our parents nurture and teach us. Then we WORK. Then we find a spouse. God wants us to be productive not lazy, employed not unemployed, happy with our work not dreading the day, compensated not taken advantage of and prosperous not struggling.
Most of all, God wants us to be His. I mean, we are, like it or not. But He wants us to realize, accept and embrace that we are His so that He can have the relationship with us that He built us for. That concept, that relationship is the basis of what the verse in Matthew is referring to.
Anything that you can think of that could possibly come between you and God is a 'mountain.' Illness, death of friends or family, job problems or dissatisfaction, sin, addiction you name it. If there is something that seems so big, so huge that you can't see God over it..... it's a mountain.
But Jesus says that if you tell the mountain to move it moves. Why doesn't that happen all the time? It should. First, you gotta believe. Can you allow the Creator to do what He does? To create? Because if a mountain moves there's gonna be some landscaping that will need to be done. That can be painful sometimes. It's not always fun or painless to get stuff out of your life.
Are there mountains in your life? Are you sick of them? What instructions does Jesus give? To start, believe. Then talk to it. That's right. Don't talk about your mountain, talk to it. Then give thanks. If God wanted you to have all this junk in your life He wouldn't tell you how to get rid of it. Aren't you glad to serve a God that wants us well?
This talking to mountains stuff might sound a little strange. But try it!! What have you got to lose? And please share the stories with me about how our magnificent Lord has moved the Earth in your life!
