Genesis 18
How many people do you talk to on a semi regular basis? How many people know that you are a Christian? This little dialog between Abraham and Jesus gives us a little insight into what Abraham assumed of his nephew Lot and the all knowing ability of God.
After a feast and relaxation Jesus decides to tell Abraham of His plans to destroy Sodom because of all the wickedness there. Abraham is sad and scared because his nephew Lot lives their. Now, they may not have seen each other in some time, but we know that they were both strong men. The kind you will take notice to when they walk into the room. Influential men.
Abraham boldly asks if He would destroy the city even if there were righteous people there. Surely it is far from Him to judge good people for the sins of the wicked. In agreement, God says that He will spare the city if there are righteous found there. It starts with 50, then gets down to 10.
And with the number ten, Abraham is satisfied. He is sure that his strong, nfluential nephew Lot has made friends with at least some people and likely brought them from the dark side. Maybe he knows that Lot has married and has two daughters who are engaged. That's 6 people. Surely Lot has found 4 God fearing folk in entire city?
While tis conversation is taking place, the angels with Jesus are already en ruote to Sodom to rescue Lot and his family because indeed, there are not 10 people to be found. Lot has not made those friends, those converts. He has not led 4 people to God. Knowing this already, the angels were sent and when Lot was safe the city was destroyed.
It sounds like such a small number. FOUR. Would your city be safe?
