Joshua 1-5
Sometimes I think we read the Bible and although it may be a good story or a nice thought we don't give it the thought that it deserves. I mean, this is the words of GOD, THE CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE! Jesus tells us that we live by not only food but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. If that is true [and it is!] then when we read shouldn't every word, every thought, every action be as important as any other?
In this passage of Joshua I have read several times how the nation of Israel crossed the Jordan River on dry ground. But until today I had never understood this part of it and what a leap of faith God was calling the Israelites to do. It is so easy for us to follow a path that has already been paved for us. It was easy for them to walk across the Red Sea when they look and see the ground to walk on. But in this passage we see that the Jordan River was flowing and at flood stage. So it is even deeper and wider than normal. Nonetheless, God says that as soon as the first of them step into the river the waters will cease and that they will cross on dry land.
Why is it so difficult for us to listen to what God is telling us? Is it simply because we don't listen? I think it's more that we don't want to look a fool. What happens when the priests step into the water and the only thing that happens is for them to be swept downstream? Those people were not afraid but rather trusting. Even though what was told would happen sounded ludicrous, they just did it. So, today, follow that example. When God is telling you something, even if it is difficult, remember He doesn't want you to look like a fool either. Rather, He wants the things we do to bring glory to Him. And what better way than to have HIm do things that only He can do.
God bless!
